I got a chance to watch both episodes of Geek Love on the Learning Channel last night. It was so strange to see a spotlight turned onto the convention scene, but rather refreshing I thought. I laughed at the definitions of geek speak and was amazed to think that there are people out there that don’t know what cosplaying is. The scandal!
The producers of the show took a light hand in this special and chose to follow only 3 or 4 single geeks before their experiences at New York ComicCon and Sci-fi speed dating. Obviously, the show did not and could not show the wide range that is geekdom and the convention circuit. But, I found the coverage to be mostly respectful and I quite enjoyed it overall.
We got to meet several young, inexperienced and passionate geeks who were into cosplaying, Ninja Turtles, Iron Man and much more. I rooted for them to find love and I was so very proud of them for not only putting themselves out there during the speed dating, but for agreeing to do it on national television. I especially loved the Mandalorian who reminded me so much of my younger, inexperienced self. As a geek dating columnist, I am especially interested in the subject and I look forward to seeing more of the show if it gets picked up.
I’d love to hear what you think about the show. Did you think it was a fair representation of single geeks? Would you like to see more of the show?
