Superheroes are masters of disguise and know that clothing can make an indelible impact on how they are viewed by criminals, the police and the public. They carefully choose costumes designed to intimidate, display their patriotism and to reflect who they are and what they stand for. I have found, in my personal experience, that geeks don’t always harness the power of fashion as they could or should.
During my painfully insecure years, I didn’t think too much about what I wore. Like so many shy people, I often tried to hide behind my clothes and I wasn’t choosing fashion that made me look good, but rather what made me feel safe. I would wear things that didn’t flatter my figure and were often adolescent. My fashion life changed when I discovered the show “What Not To Wear”. After almost every show, I got inspired and started rifling through my closet to get rid of ill-fitting, ugly and inappropriate clothing. I found that after I started dressing for my figure and age, my confidence shot up. Fashion will not necessarily do the same for you, but I think when we feel better about the way that we look, we become more comfortable in our own skin and more confident in general. As I have said many a time, confidence is absolutely key to dating successfully.
Now, before you think that I’m recommending you get rid of that drawer full of TeeFury shirts, stop right there. I adore geeky shirts and I think they can absolutely be a staple of your wardrobe. There are a few ladies in the LxL, who shall remain nameless or they will hurt me, who totally rock their geeky tees and look amazing doing it. There are small things you can do to really add a bit of flair and fashion to a basic ensemble. I’m a huge of adding a blazer, a sweater or a bolero. This adds just a little extra something that shows you put a bit of thought into your outfit. You can also totally embrace the idea of accessories. Add a bracelet, some cool earrings and even cute shoes if you so desire. I don’t personally believe in heels (I’m 5’10” after all), but some of the unnamed LxLers wouldn’t dare leave the house without a pair of rockin heels. A couple even have Star Wars heels that are amazeballs.
Dressing for your body type is absolutely key when discussing fashion. We are each completely unique and we do not have the same basic shape. We have different curves, heights, weights, shoe sizes, etc. We should not all wear the same thing because we are not all the same. I recommend doing a basic internet search on “dressing for your body type”. There are so many resources out there that can help you get an idea of what cuts and styles will make you feel confident and beautiful, because you all deserve to feel that way. Our own Christy Black is very involved with Healthy Is The New Skinny which is all about embracing who you are, no matter what size. I highly recommend checking them out at http://healthyisthenewskinny.com. Christy also recommends the book, “The Science of Sexy” by Bradley Bayou.
You may be apprehensive about all of this, but I just want you all to embrace who you are and to keep on being extraordinary. I believe fashion can help with this and I hope you will discover the same. This is not about fitting in with anyone’s ideals or buying into the latest fashion craze. This is about you being who you are deep down inside and letting that beauty shine from within. Good luck out there dear readers.
